August 2003

This abbreviated newsletter is presented by the ssastros Webmaster.

1.   The meeting was open by Vice President Louis Gentile.  Louis reviewed upcoming events, Public Observing at the Plymouth Library on Monday April 11th and “Mars Watch” every Saturday from August 9th through September 13th.  There was a lot of discussion about viewing of Mars.  A few members have been able to view Mars to date when the weather has cooperated.  All members are looking forward to the next month.

2.   Chuck filled the membership in on our status with the Astronomical League.

3.   Louis showed the club the Constellation cards made by deceased member Lois Horton.  Lois was a talented long time member of the club who made cards with different constellation shown.  Bill Luzader had several of these cards mounted and framed.  It is hoped that this work of art will be displayed at the Council of Aging as a tribute to our friend.

4.   Talked next turned to a discussion of Stellafane.  Louis Gentile, Don Greeley, Alden Wells and Sean Maroney all attended and all agreed that is was one of the wettest in recent memory.  Don had a few pictures that he showed those present.

5.   Louis relayed an invitation from the Astronomical Society of Northern New England.  We have been invited to there annual star party, Starfest Star Party.  This is an annual event held in Kennebunk, Maine on the weekend of September 19th and 20th.  Check their web site at http://www.asnne.org/

6.   Reminder, the Perseid Meteor shower peaks on the morning of Wednesday August 13th.  Best viewing is around 3 A.M. once the moon is low.

7.   Sean Maroney made a rare appearance at the August meeting.  Sean is back from Egypt for the summer but plans to return for another year in late August.  Because of Sean travels, he has resigned from position of Secretary.  There were no immediate takers for this position.  The society wishes Sean all the best and thanks him for his diligent work during his term as Secretary.

8.   Rolf brought his new Orion CCD eyepiece.  This is a very interesting piece of equipment at a reasonable price.

9.   The meeting concluded with members moving over to the field for some rare viewing with John Flores new LX200 7”.
