The meeting was called to order at 7:30.  There were 21 attendees.

 

Chuck reminded everyone that club dues are due.

 

The minutes from the board meeting on Saturday January 31 were handed out.

 

The Nightsky Network is a partnership of astronomy clubs, including the Astronomical League, the Astronomical League of the Pacific, and NASA.  

 

Tenney publicly thanked Andy for the graphics and patches for our shirts. 

 

Andy talked to Goodwin Graphics about making club hats. The net total for the hats will be $520 for 100 hats.  They will be blue with white lettering, have a picture of Saturn, “Keep looking up”, and the club web address on the front.  A motion was made, seconded, and passed to purchase these hats.

 

The observing session on March 20 will be a Messier Marathon.  If it is cloudy then Marathon will be held the following week on March 27.  Tenney will ask Rosemary for permission to use the Council of Aging.

 

Astronomy Day is on April 24. Tenney will ask Rosemary for permission to use Council of Aging.  Rolf will bring his meteor display.  We will hold our annual telescope contest. Bill, Louis, and Alden volunteered read the essays for this contest.  The committee for Astronomy Day is Rolf, Richard, and Louis will do the publicity.

 

We have been invited to participate in an Astronomy Weekend on April 17th at the YMCA Camp in Sandwich.  

 

Bill will be holding Astronomy nights at the elementary schools in Plymouth on Tuesday and Wednesday nights during March starting on the 9th. He is looking for volunteers to help with this.  He would like at least three telescopes to be there each night.

 

We have been asked to help with a teacher workshop at Bridgewater State College on July 6 and August 13. By the end of March we will know if we have received the grant to do this.

 

We have use of a Saturn vehicle for the Plymouth 4th of July Parade.  We are planning to use it to pull a float.  Thus will be a good opportunity to advertise the club.  Volunteers are needed to help plan and put together the float in May or June.

 

The next board meeting will be on July 31 before the annual summer picnic at Tenney’s.

 

Rolf received a letter from Robin Symonds at the Museum of Science thanking us for helping with Astronomy Day in previous years.  This year there will be no Astronomy Day activities on Saturday at the Museum.  Instead, a star party will be held on Friday on the roof and we are invited to join.

Sally Owens from the Quincy Park Department contacted Rolf asking if we would do a program for them on Friday February 27.  Volunteers are needed to help with observing and a slide program. 

 

A discussion of h-alpha filters, specifically Coronado’s, ensued.

 

Richard invited the club members to a meeting of the Rhode Island Skyscrapers which was held at the NASA Planetary Data Center at Brown University on Friday February 6.  This meeting was open to the public.

 

Tenney welcomed new members Rob Smith and Steve Laflamme.

 

The meeting was adjourned at 8:30.  Steve then gave a slide presentation called Planetary Imagery Using Webcam.  We were all very impressed.
