MEETING MINUTES

July 2, 2008

 

PRESENTATION

 

We watched two “TED Talks”.  The first talk “Fly me to the moons of Saturn by Carolyn Porco” talked about the recent discoveries and explorations of the moons of Saturn; these were made by the Cassini and Huygens satellites.

The second talk “Asking big questions about the universe” was by Steven Hawking

 

 

OLD BUSINESS

 

1. BBQ Dates and Detail.  This years BBQ will take place a Tenney’s house on Aug. 9th with a rain date of Aug. 10th.  There will be a Board Meeting at 12: 00 followed with the BBQ at 1:00.  Tenney says the pool will be available and that the back viewing area will be available.  Information can be found on the member’s only page.

2. 50th Celebration Planning Meeting Date.  We need to establish a planning meeting date for our 50th Celebration in Sept.

3. Public Observing Program.   Plymouth Library Aug 11 Presentation by Bill at 7:30, Observing starting at 8:30 more information at the next meeting

4. PCIS Observatory. Paul and Steve reported on the work meeting in June for the PCIS Observatory.  Currently there are some problems getting the scope, dome and computer to communicate.  Work should continue during the summer.

5. 4th of July Parade. We will not have a float this year

 

 

NEW BUSINESS

 

1.Viewing Dates.  Scheduled viewing nights are July 5th, July 26th & Aug. 2nd.  weather permitting.

2. Persied Meteors. The Persied Meteor Shower will occur Aug. 11-14, with a Full Moon Aug 16.  Perhaps we could view on Sunday night Aug. 11th.  More next meeting.

3. Leonid Meteors.  Dates for the Leonid Meteors are Nov. 16 – 18 with a Full Moon on Nov. 13 and a New Moon on Nov 27.  Further research and discussion will determine if we establish and “official” event.
