Event Horizon

June 2003

This abbreviated newsletter is presented by the ssastros Webmaster.

1.   The meeting started with a review of this year’s Astronomy Day.  The general consensus was that this was a very successful event.  Louis read an e-mail from our telescope winner Cassandra, thanking us for her telescope.

2.   The upcoming viewing nights around Mars was discussed by Louis.  From Aug. 9 through Sept. 13, we will hold weekly observation nights at the field highlighting Mars.  Louis also talked about Aug 27th as “Mars Day”.  More planning next month.

3.   On August 11th there will be a public observing night at the Plymouth Public Library.

4.   Skip talked about a recent article in the Globe discussing Mars.

5.   Another interesting topic was the recent alert that Cassiopeia-rho will increase in magnitude over the next few weeks.  This is a star the periodically greatly changes in magnitude.

6.   There will be a Telescope Night at the Blake Planetarium on June 12th.  Bill is looking for help.  On June 19th there will be a harp concert at the Planetarium to celebrate the summer solstice.

7.   The evening concluded with pictures of the Texas Star Party by Louis Gentile.  This was a most enjoyable presentation.  Thank you Louis.
