The meeting was called to order at 7:30 with 18 people in attendance.

Tenny thanked us for putting together Astronomy Day.  Although we did not have the crowds we had hoped for, all those who were there had a great time.  Kyle McDonald won the telescope. He and his family joined us for observing that evening.

Skip donated an empty eyepiece case for any club members who want it.

Paul received a poster from the Night Sky Network.  He shared it with the club.

We have sold almost enough hats for us to break even on this venture.  Only one more hat needs to be sold; then any more sold will be profit for our club.

On May 7, Rolf will be at the Cole School in Norwell to help teach two third grade classes about the stars.  If the weather cooperates, these students will view the constellations at 10 pm.  Volunteers are needed to bring telescopes and help show the heavens to the students.

Volunteers are needed to help build the float for the Plymouth Fourth of July Parade.  A committee was formed and will meet at Tenny’s workshop to paint and cut the plexiglass that will be used to for the rings of Saturn.  A discussion of how to make the float ensued.

We received a grant to teach two summer workshops about the Earth and the Solar System to teachers.  The workshops will be held at Bridgewater State College the weeks of July 5 and August 16.  On Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of each week volunteers and telescopes will be needed.

Bob will talk to a Selectman in Norwell about the insurance. Andy will look into an insurance company he found online that is based in California.  Other options that would lower our insurance were also discussed.

There will be a transit of Venus on June 8.  We will observe this rare event from Centennial Field at 5 am.  A discussion about types of solar filters necessary to view this ensued.

Three comets are visible in the sky during May: Bradfield, NEAT, and LINEAR.  Bradfield is near Andromedia before sunrise, but is fading from view.  NEAT is rising and is near the Beehive cluster between Gemini and Leo.  LINEAR is near Sirus.  Viewing sessions will be held on May 15 and 22 to view these comets.

We discussed where telescopes could be bought now that Boston Telescope has closed.

John brought the visitor tape from the Kennedy Space Center to share with us.  We will view this at our June meeting.

Andy has the video from Astronomy Day and will make copies of it for anyone who wants one.  This will also be viewed at our June meeting.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:35.
