South Shore Astronomical Society – Executive Board Meeting
July 31, 2004
The meeting was called to order at 1:25 p.m. There were 12 people in attendance.
Chuck gave us the Treasure’s report. As of July 19, our balance is $1112.09. He received a confirmation from our new insurance company and he cancelled the previous insurance.
The Executive Board decided that our club membership price should remain the same and we discussed ways to make our club more attractive for new members. We considered making a welcome packet with information about astronomy for new members.
We discussed the possibility of holding workshops for both new members who are new to astronomy and current members who would like to learn more. Beginners’ workshops could include how to buy a telescope, how to use their new telescope, and observing for each season.
Paul and Andy will create a survey to mail to all members concerning all options and suggestions for changes in the monthly meetings. These changes may include the set-up of the meeting and times to meet.
The Board felt that as a club we should have more guest speakers and maybe some field trips. Field trips would be open to everyone, but members would receive a discount. These would help to bring in new members.
It was decided that we need someone to handle publicity. Andy will start looking into the possibility of advertising our club on television. Volunteers for a Public Relations committee are needed.
On Monday August 16, we will be holding a workshop for teachers at Bridgewater State College. Telescopes and volunteers will be needed rain or shine. Please talk to Bill for further details.
Paul showed us pictures from our in float in the Plymouth July 4th Parade.
The meeting was adjourned at 2:55 p.m.
