South Shore Astronomical Society - Board Meeting

Old Business

 

1.      Treasurers Report – Chuck

 

a.       Donation to Council on Aging for use of facilities – $100 now

 

b.      Membership Update – 26 paid members; have not paid Astronomical League, yet ($10 + $5 per member)

 

2.      Web Page Update – Paul

 

a.       Society Web Page Size - consider upgrade of size for March, ’07, when renewed ($75 as opposed to $50)

 

b.      To allow for more memory now, images that have been posted for a while will be removed.

 

3.      Upcoming programs

 

a.      Monthly: (Bill) possibilities: Steve LaFlemme, Todd Gross, Bridgewater State & Wheaton College physics and astronomy professors (Martina Arndt), NASA Weymouth, Tenny Doble - eyepiece explanation (Jan 3, 2007) … ANY VOLUNTEERS?

 

b.       Cub Scout Program – club members and telescopes on Saturday evening September 16th, at Centennial Park Norwood

 

c.      Telescope donation for Cushing Elementary in Scituate – Bill

School year is starting so date and time will be set

 

4.      Step Foundation Update – Bill

5.      Trips and Observation Nights

 

a.       Possible night at Myles Standish Fri Nov 17; NASA van at Weymouth High School during week of October 2, 2006 – Rolf and Bill are checking for more details and possible involvement of SSAS

 

b.      Arrange visit to the observatories at SkyScrapers in North Scituate, Rhode Island, some Saturday in October or November; arrange a Saturday visit to the Cape Cod Astronomical Society observatory at Dennis-Yarmouth High School

 

New Business

1.      Long Range Activities

 

a.       Leonid Meteor Shower – Fri. Nov. 17 (see above)

 

b.      Astronomy Day 2007 – Apr. 21. Church again? Louis will inquire

 

c.       50th Anniversary of SSAS coming in 2008! Plan Big Bash Monster cook out at Centennial field? Keep in mind for future plans

 

d.        Mercury transit Wednesday November 8, 2006, begins around 2 pm lasting past sunset – Turkey Hill (for good western view)?

 

2.      Other Ideas

 

Steve Zoolon has 10 inch telescope that he would like to contribute to SSAS
