SOUTH SHORE ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY NEWSLETTER
Vol. 2 #1 (June/July 2012)
by Paul Grueter, President
EVENT REVIEW:
April and May were busy months with three major evens.
Astronomy Day was once again a great success. Attendance was down a little but there was great enthusiasm. The Scituate Library continues to be an exceptional partner for these events.
Because of a personal schedule change I was not able to join the club at the Plymouth River School PTO program in Hingham. However, by all reports a good time was had by all.
The Venus Transit, actually a June event, did not happen. The old astronomical problem, weather, kept us from live viewing. Many of us did watch the event on the Internet, however. The good news is that we established a connection with the Blue Hills Observatory and I hope to schedule a viewing night sometime this fall.
UPCOMING EVENTS:
Other events:
1. Abington Library, Presentation and Viewing, June 28th
2. Plymouth Public Library, Presentation and Viewing, July 30th
3. Program with South Coast Printmakers and Fall Astronomy Day, Norwell, Oct. 20th
Once again there are several events schedule over the next two months and your help is necessary to make these events a success.
SUMMER VIEWING AT
THE SCITUATE LIBRARY:
Both Louis and George a planning to have weekly viewing sessions at the Scituate Library again. They will start on June 28th and run through the summer. Initially they will be there on Thursdays but will probably change to Fridays, once school starts in the fall.
This is a considerable commitment by both and I really appreciate their dedication to the project. Both George and Louis have said it is extremely rewarding and there is an amazing interest.
They are always looking for help, so feel free to join them on a Thursday.
BANK UPDATE:
Chuck announced that the Bank of America account is now closed. Bob has setup an account with Citizens Bank, which has much better terms.
At the May meeting the Treasury was ÒofficiallyÓ transferred with the passing of the brief case, perhaps not as significant as some ceremonies but still very meaningful. This marks the official end of the ÒChuckÓ McCarthy era. Far as long as I can remember he has been the treasurer of the club, a job that no one else wanted, but is probably the most important one in the club. It took Chuck a couple of months to clear out the Òbrief case of powerÓ, before he could pass it on the Bob.
Thanks again Chuck.
